Things to Discuss With Your Contractor Before Commencing Renovation Work

Once all the decisions have been made and the contract signed, you must be eager for the home construction contractor to begin their work immediately.

However, a pre-construction meeting must take place about a week before the construction to cover a few important points regarding how the project is to be given shape.

Some of the important points to be covered in that meeting are –

  • Working Hours and Days:

Most home construction contractors have standard working hours which can vary depending on whether the home is occupied or vacant.

For this, you need to figure out whether the contractor will work on the weekends and evenings as well. Having a conversation on this topic before the renovation work begins will help set clear-cut expectations.

  • Parking and Recycling/Trash Days:

Depending on the geographical location of your project, there may be enough number of parking spots or none.

The neighbors may be very particular about their parking spots. You may also need to obtain a work permit from the local municipal authorities for parking the dumpsters and other pieces of machinery.

You need to communicate when your recycling and trash pickup usually takes place as you would not want your home renovation contractor to block the road with the equipment on those days and cause inconvenience for your neighbors.

  • Access and Security:

You should talk to the home renovation contractors as to how they will be accessing your home and where the keys will be kept. The security codes for alarm systems also need to be reviewed.

A number of security companies allow a temporary code to be set which the contractor can use beside the primary one that you and your family happen to use.

The benefit of having a temporary code is that, once the job is done, the code which was shared with the contractor can be canceled.

You can also talk about setting up fences and signs.
